In March 2024 we covered a clear, urgent warning: the FDA flagged a link between Viagra (and similar erectile dysfunction drugs) and sudden sensorineural hearing loss — sometimes called "Viagra deafness." Research shows users may face about double the risk compared with non-users. That’s a big jump and worth knowing if you or someone you care for takes these meds.
The FDA update pointed to reports and studies that found a higher chance of sudden hearing loss after taking these drugs. "Sudden sensorineural hearing loss" means a rapid drop in hearing in one or both ears, often noticed over hours or days. The warning doesn’t say everyone will get this side effect, but it does raise the risk enough to take symptoms seriously and act fast.
Why this matters: hearing loss can become permanent if not treated quickly. The research isn’t yet a full explanation of how the drugs might cause hearing damage, but the pattern in reports is strong enough that regulators want users and prescribers to be cautious.
Notice sudden changes in hearing? Do this right away: stop the medication and seek medical help. Call your doctor or an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. If you can, get a hearing test within 72 hours — early treatment can improve the chance of recovery. Tell your clinician what drug you took, when you took it, and exactly what symptoms you felt.
Other useful actions: report the event to the FDA MedWatch program so regulators can track patterns, and keep a record of any other medicines or medical conditions you have. If you have a history of ear problems or cardiovascular issues, mention that to your doctor before restarting or switching therapies.
Not all treatment stops are automatic. Don’t restart or switch medications without talking to your health provider. For some people the benefits of ED drugs outweigh the risks, but that’s a personal medical decision. A doctor can suggest safer alternatives, dose changes, or non-drug options depending on your health and priorities.
We wrote this in March 2024 because it’s practical and immediate news for anyone taking these medicines. If you’re on Viagra or a similar drug, pay attention to your hearing, act fast on sudden changes, and have an honest talk with your prescriber about risks and alternatives.
A recent revelation has highlighted a concerning side effect associated with Viagra and similar erectile dysfunction drugs: a risk of sudden sensorineural hearing loss, or 'Viagra deafness'. The FDA has issued a warning as studies reveal users are at a doubled risk compared to non-users.
